Wood-burning sauna stove size

Wood stoves are rated by the room volume they can heat, not by kilowatts. Calculate the room's effective volume first, then pick a stove whose range includes it.

Calculate the effective volume

Use the same correction as for electric heaters: add 1.2 m³ for every m² of glass or masonry, and multiply by 1.5 for solid log or uninsulated walls. The calculator does this when you choose Wood-burning.

Heat-storing stoves

The Narvi Aito stoves in the table are heat-storing: you fire them once before bathing and the large stone mass gives löyly for hours with the fire out. See smoke saunas and heat-storing stoves.

Before you buy

  • A wood stove needs a certified chimney and the manufacturer's safety distances to walls and benches.
  • Place a fresh-air inlet low and close to the stove so it gets combustion air.
  • Heavier stone loads give softer steam but take longer to heat.
  • Indoor wood stoves are restricted by many building codes and insurers; check before planning one.
